Abandoned Animals
This dog was once someone’s loving puppy.
Statistics tell us that his family … probably were excited to get him … probably fed him and might have gotten some of his shots … they might even have bought him a collar and a toy … most likely he never got heartworm preventative because he is seriously heartworm positive… he might even have gotten to sleep inside in a box while he was a puppy. Then he grew and they lost interest … they tossed him outside and fed him sometimes … he ran free through the county and eventually got mange … that’s when they drove down a gravel road and dumped him off.
Just imagine that he wandered around wondering what had happened to his family and why they didn’t love him anymore. People probably threw things at him to chase him off, someone fired a pellet gun at him because he had small pellets in his hind quarters. He began not to trust people. Finally a loving couple took him in and called NAFA. Volunteers went to their house and picked him up. Panicked, he bit one of the volunteers, but not too bad. Nothing they hadn’t experienced before.
Last night for the first time in a long time, he found himself inside a warm place, in a crate with a blanket. People who cared and even a kiss on the head.
But the saddest of all is that he is only one of hundreds are dogs that are abandoned or dumped by families who no longer want to care for their pets.
NAFA is looking for the persons who drove a Blue Ford SUV and dumped two shepherd mix puppies in Lawrence County on January 2nd. The dogs were rescued by a wonderful woman, who got partial plates on the vehicle. NAFA wishes to talk with the individuals, in hopes of working out the information to avoid prosecution. If you know anything about this case, please email wanndat@fastdata.net

New Year's Rescue
Shortly before the new year, NAFA was contacted by a concerned citizen who saw a situation that she felt was unacceptable. Dogs were living in pens on and off the ground with little or no shelter, heat, etc. The sheriff’s department was contacted and made a visit. An additional call was made to NAFA for assistance.
After several conversations with the owners NAFA was able to get the dogs surrendered. In all 12 dogs were removed, 2 will come in next week. Although the dogs appeared to be fed, they were covered in fleas, urine and poop. None of the dogs had received vaccinations, including Rabies—required by law. When NAFA arrived they were inside but the outside conditions they had been in were not acceptable. The majority of them were seriously unsocialized with fear aggressive issues.. Four dogs were allowed to remain on the property with conditions that they have vaccinations.
While this is certainly not a case of gross abuse, the conditions were neglectful and it was obvious that the owners had gotten into a situation where they had more dogs than they could care for. No charges were brought and NAFA has offered them assistance through our low cost vaccination clinics.
There will never be enough homes …
Go to www.nafasbigfix.org for more information on joining "The Big Fix Club" helping NAFA offer low cost spay/neuters. Also learn how you could get a "Free Spay/Neuter".
NAFA has no shelter. The majority of our animals are kept in foster homes.
NAFA does have an Animal Services Building located at 233 N. Gee Street - red and white building on corner of Gee Street and Dan Avenue across from Riceland Foods. At this building we provide services such as our low cost vaccination clinics / low cost cat neuter / Animeals Food Bank / interium housing for animals moving from foster to vets or to adoption. By appointment only we also take in animals at this location. At this location you can also see our 40' trailer that is being converted into a spay/disaster trailer.
NAFA is one of the most active rescues in the State of Arkansas. We are staffed strictly by volunteers. We are funded by public donations. All donations go directly to the care of neglected, abandoned and abuse animals or to our community services programs.
